We are pleased to announce a great opportunity for a Consultant in Public Health to join our dynamic team in Peterborough City Council. Peterborough City Council is a unitary authority serving a thriving, rapidly growing and culturally diverse city. Peterborough is a special place, rich in natural beauty, community spirit, and opportunity. It's location provides easy access to many parts of the country, while the surrounding nature reserves, ancient woodlands, the river Nene and the Cathedral give the city a distinctive character Discover Peterborough | More than you imagine. As one of the fastest-growing areas in the UK, Peterborough boasts a vibrant community and a forward-thinking environment. In 2023, we were recognised as a most improved council, marking our commitment to continuous progress.
This is a senior leadership position within Peterborough City Council, forming part of the wider Leadership Team and reporting directly to the Director of Public Health (DPH). You will provide public health leadership across a range of population level activities, commission services and work with partners to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities. As a Chief Officer, you will provide authoritative public health leadership across the Council, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough health and care system, other partners including the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector, and wider agencies.

All about You
The Consultant in Public Health works with the Director of Public Health and other consultant colleagues to deliver the statutory duty placed on local government to improve health, protect health and reduce health inequality. The post-holder will be expected to work effectively with partners across the whole council, and with communities and organisations across Peterborough and any future Unitary Authority that replaces it to achieve public health objectives.
The post-holder will ensure the high-quality, cost-effective and safe delivery of public health services and will lead work across all Council directorates and partnership boards to maximise opportunities to create the conditions for health and reduce inequalities. This will include using the Outcomes Frameworks as well as exploring other relevant routinely collected data systems for suitable indicators.
Although the Consultant will lead a defined portfolio of work, flexibility is a fundamental requirement of this role. The post-holder will be expected to work in a matrix manner across the Public Health directorate and may be required to take on responsibilities across different portfolios depending on service needs, gaps in capacity or changing organisational priorities. This ensures the resilience and agility of the Public Health function and enables consultants to contribute to the full breadth of public health work.
The post-holder will build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of system partners including, but not limited to, the Integrated Care Board (ICB), NHS Trusts, primary care providers, the third sector, local communities and other local authorities. This cross-system working is central to achieving public health outcomes and reducing health inequalities.
The post-holder will hold corporate and managerial responsibilities commensurate with the role. The specific portfolio of responsibilities will be determined upon appointment in line with the requirements of the service at that point and may change over time in line with the needs of the service.
