All about the Role
Peterborough City Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Democratic Services Officers to join our Legal and Governance Directorate and play a key role in supporting effective, transparent and lawful decision‑making across the Council.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of local democracy, providing high‑quality committee and governance support to elected Members, senior officers and external partners. You will be responsible for agenda planning, convening and supporting formal meetings, issuing agendas, recording proceedings, and producing accurate minutes, decisions and recommendations for Council, Cabinet, regulatory and scrutiny committees.
The role requires the provision of clear, confident and impartial governance and constitutional advice, often in politically sensitive environments. You will support the implementation of the Council's Constitution, help resolve complex procedural issues, maintain committee work programmes, and ensure full compliance with statutory and constitutional requirements. You will also contribute to member and officer training and keep abreast of legislative developments and best practice in democratic governance.
We are looking for someone with strong experience of committee administration, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a high level of attention to detail. You must be able to analyse and interpret legislation, manage competing deadlines, and work flexibly to support meetings outside normal office hours. Experience of local government decision‑making and committee management systems is essential.
In return, we offer a varied and rewarding role, the opportunity to be at the heart of high‑profile decision‑making, and the chance to develop your expertise within a committed and professional Democratic Services team.
