Housing Surveyor

All about the Role

Peterborough City Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Housing Surveyor to take a leading role in managing, maintaining, and improving the condition of our accommodation portfolio. You will be responsible for ensuring that all properties are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose, supporting some of the city's most vulnerable residents and helping the Council meet its statutory and regulatory obligations.

This is a vital operational role within the Place & Economy directorate, contributing directly to the quality, safety, and efficiency of our housing services.

Key Responsibilities

As a Housing Surveyor, you will:

  • Manage and maintain voids and repairs, ensuring properties are returned to a lettable standard promptly and cost‑effectively.
  • Oversee the general condition and lifecycle maintenance of the Council's housing assets.
  • Ensure full compliance with statutory health and safety requirements, including (but not limited to) fire safety, gas safety, electrical compliance, and environmental health standards.
  • Carry out regular inspections, identify remedial works, specify repairs, and monitor contractor performance.
  • Maintain compliance and operational oversight across a diverse property portfolio, including:
    • Temporary Accommodation (purchased and leased)
    • Local Authority Housing Fund properties
    • Rough Sleeper Accommodation
    • Traveller Sites
    • Any additional housing assets within the Place & Economy directorate
  • Produce detailed reports, maintain accurate records, and support decision‑making through professional building surveying advice.
  • Work closely with internal teams, contractors, and partner organisations to ensure timely delivery of works and a high-quality resident experience.
  • Safeguard residents by ensuring properties are safe, secure, and compliant at all times.

All about You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in housing, building surveying, property management, or a related field.
  • Understands statutory compliance relating to residential properties and local authority housing.
  • Can confidently diagnose building defects and specify appropriate remedial solutions.
  • Works proactively, manages a varied workload, and responds effectively to urgent issues.
  • Builds strong relationships with contractors, colleagues, and service users.
  • Has excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high property standards.

Relevant qualifications (e.g. HNC/HND in Building Surveying, CIOB/ RICS accreditation, or equivalent experience) are desirable but not essential for the right candidate.
