This is a vital operational role within the Place & Economy directorate, contributing directly to the quality, safety, and efficiency of our housing services.
Key Responsibilities
As a Housing Surveyor, you will:
- Manage and maintain voids and repairs, ensuring properties are returned to a lettable standard promptly and cost‑effectively.
- Oversee the general condition and lifecycle maintenance of the Council's housing assets.
- Ensure full compliance with statutory health and safety requirements, including (but not limited to) fire safety, gas safety, electrical compliance, and environmental health standards.
- Carry out regular inspections, identify remedial works, specify repairs, and monitor contractor performance.
- Maintain compliance and operational oversight across a diverse property portfolio, including:
- Temporary Accommodation (purchased and leased)
- Local Authority Housing Fund properties
- Rough Sleeper Accommodation
- Traveller Sites
- Any additional housing assets within the Place & Economy directorate
- Produce detailed reports, maintain accurate records, and support decision‑making through professional building surveying advice.
- Work closely with internal teams, contractors, and partner organisations to ensure timely delivery of works and a high-quality resident experience.
- Safeguard residents by ensuring properties are safe, secure, and compliant at all times.
All about You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience in housing, building surveying, property management, or a related field.
- Understands statutory compliance relating to residential properties and local authority housing.
- Can confidently diagnose building defects and specify appropriate remedial solutions.
- Works proactively, manages a varied workload, and responds effectively to urgent issues.
- Builds strong relationships with contractors, colleagues, and service users.
- Has excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high property standards.
Relevant qualifications (e.g. HNC/HND in Building Surveying, CIOB/ RICS accreditation, or equivalent experience) are desirable but not essential for the right candidate.
