Are you a Business Rates or Council Tax Recovery Officer with senior-level experience, looking for your next challenge?

All about the Role

The Revenues and Benefits Service has a vital role in the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax, Business Rates and Sundry Debt.

We are looking to recruit three experienced and motivated Senior Local Taxation Officers to join our Revenues team within Shared Transactional Services. The successful candidate(s) will report to either the Council Tax or Business Rates Team Leader.

In these key roles, you will support the effective administration, billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and/or Council Tax, ensuring services are delivered in line with legislation, local policy and best practice.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Processing taxation amendments, discounts, exemptions and reliefs
  • Undertaking billing and recovery actions in line with statutory requirements
  • Proactively reviewing arrears and progressing advanced recovery where appropriate, including preparation for bankruptcy and charging order cases
  • Liaising with the HMRC Valuation Office, Enforcement Agents, and internal teams
  • Responding to customer enquiries while maintaining high standards of customer service
  • Managing your own caseload within a performance-driven revenues environment

What you will need for the role

You will...

- have detailed knowledge of local taxation legislation and recovery processes.

- be able to interpret and apply complex legislation accurately.

- be confident in making informed decisions on the appropriate next stage of recovery action, including write‑off decisions where applicable.

- have strong communication skills with a customer‑focused approach

- have experience of effectively handling internal and external calls across Council Tax and/or Business Rates

- have good organisational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise reactive and ad‑hoc work

- be confident in using multiple IT systems

Experience of using MRI One Revenues and Benefits (Academy) would be an advantage; however, full training will be provided for the right candidate.

Appointment to this post will be subject to a DBS check obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff to share this commitment.
