All about the Role
A Subject Access Request (SAR) is a request from an individual to see the personal data we hold about them. People often make a SAR so they can understand decisions made about them or their family. SARs can relate to many council services, including children's social care, adult social care, education, Council Tax and benefits.
We must handle SARs in line with data protection law, including the UK GDPR. This means making sure disclosures are accurate and secure, and that we respond within the statutory timeframe. In this role, you will manage a SAR from start to finish: confirm the request is valid, clarify what the customer wants, find the relevant information, and review the records before disclosure. You will also redact information about third parties and anything covered by an exemption, and keep a clear decision log to explain and support those redactions.
This is a key role for our customers because the information we hold can be so important to understanding their life. For example, people with care experience may request their records to understand their time in care, what decisions were made, and to help them piece together their personal history. By handling SARs with care, accuracy and within statutory deadlines, you will be helping people access information that matters to them, improve transparency, and build trust that we treat personal data respectfully and fairly.
