All about the team

At City College Peterborough, we are passionate about transforming lives through learning. We provide an inspiring, inclusive, and supportive adult education experience that empowers individuals to gain new skills, build confidence, achieve their goals, and unlock their full potential. Through high-quality learning opportunities, we help people thrive both personally and professionally, enabling them to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

The successful candidate will join our Tailored Learning team, a passionate and dedicated group committed to helping adults from all backgrounds develop the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to progress into further learning, employment, or improved wellbeing.

Our provision also includes family learning programmes that empower parents, carers, and family members to support their children's learning, strengthening confidence, aspirations, and outcomes for the whole family.

All about the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and inspiring Sessional Tutor who is passionate about helping adults from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities unlock their potential.

Many of our learners are returning to education – sometimes for the first time in years - and you will play a key role in helping them build their skills, confidence, motivation and resilience. Through your teaching and support, you will enable learners to work towards their personal goals, whether that is gaining employment, participating in volunteering, progressing in learning, supporting their child's development, improving their health and wellbeing, or becoming more active within their communities.

Most courses are delivered within communities across Peterborough and surrounding areas in the morning or afternoon, including schools, family hubs, community centres and places of worship. Some courses may also take place at City College Peterborough, so a willingness to travel to different venues is essential.

This is a sessional tutor role, with courses delivered according to learner demand and funding availability.

Principal duties and responsibilities

As a Sessional Tutor, you will:

  1. Take a creative lead in designing and delivering engaging, practical, accessible, and learner-centred courses that respond to local needs and priorities.
  2. Create and share high-quality teaching and learning resources.
  3. Maintain accurate course documentation to meet quality, funding, and Ofsted requirements.
  4. Record and monitor learners' initial assessment, progress and achievement.
  5. Support learner recruitment, induction, and discuss progression routes.
  6. Provide encouragement and support throughout each learner's journey.
  7. Contribute to quality improvement and share effective practice with colleagues.
  8. Participate in team meetings, training, and cross-college events.
  9. Uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion responsibilities.
  10. Maintain professional standards and engage in continuous professional development.
  11. Contribute to the college's Matrix Information, Advice and Guidance standards.
  12. Provide occasional holiday or sickness cover for colleagues where required.

We are particularly keen to hear from tutors with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Digital skills and online inclusion
  • Family learning and parental engagement, including supporting parents to understand how English and maths are taught in primary schools
  • Performing arts for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities
  • Woodwork and practical skills
  • British Sign Language (BSL)
  • First Aid for the Home
  • English, maths, and other essential skills
  • Personal development and community-focused learning

All about you

You'll be passionate about making a difference through learning and committed to helping adults achieve their goals. We're looking for someone who is:

  • Enthusiastic, adaptable, and learner-focused.
  • A confident communicator who can build positive relationships with people from all backgrounds.
  • Motivated, proactive, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Creative in identifying opportunities that meet the needs of learners and local communities.
  • Positive, resilient, and driven by a "can-do" attitude.
  • Eager to learn, develop, and inspire others to succeed.
  • Committed to creating opportunities that help individuals, families, and communities thrive.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Nathalie Verbruggen, Tailored Learning Curriculum Coordinator, at Nathalie.Verbruggen@peterborough.gov.uk.

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be invited to deliver a 30-minute micro-teach, followed by an interview.

Provisional Interview Date 15th o r 17th September

Our Commitments
We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer, dedicated to fostering diversity, advancing equity, and building an inclusive workplace for everyone. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and particularly encourage those from underrepresented groups, including disabled people, care leavers, and individuals from minority ethnic communities. Your unique perspectives and experiences are encouraged and valued and will play a vital role in our success.

We are committed to making our recruitment process as accessible as possible. If you are a person who has or considers yourself to have a disability and you require reasonable adjustments to the application or interview process, please contact pccrecruitment@peterborough.gov.uk.

Appointment to this post will be subject to the outcome of an Enhanced Disclosure obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

If you've already applied and completed the recruitment process for this position within the last three months, there's no need to reapply. We really appreciate your interest and thank you for considering us
