All about the Role

The Revenues and Benefits Service has a vital role in the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax, Business Rates and Sundry Debt (Accounts Receivable).

We currently have an opportunity to join our Accounts Receivable team as a Senior Sundry Debt Officer, reporting to the Local Taxation Manager.

You will be responsible for all debt recovery activity within the Sundry Debt Team, delivering an effective and efficient service that maximises income collection for the Council. This work must be carried out in line with relevant legislation and internal council policies. You will work closely with stakeholders to ensure the service remains customer‑focused, compliant, and achieves strong results.

All about our Team

You will have line management responsibility for a team of five Sundry Debt Officers. The team's core purpose is to maximise income collection across the council whilst maintaining a fair, consistent, and customer‑focused approach. The team balances firm recovery action with a strong commitment to customer service and efficient administrative processes to ensure payments are allocated accurately and in a timely manner. The team regularly engage with internal departments, external partners, and customers to resolve issues, agree repayment plans, and escalate cases where appropriate.

All about You

You will be an experienced debt recovery professional with a strong understanding of legislation, policies and best practice that underpin effective income collection, ideally  within a local authority setting. You bring a confident, structured approach to managing complex caseloads and are comfortable making sound, evidence‑based decisions, including when recommending further enforcement action or write‑offs.

You are organised, methodical and able to plan and prioritise your workload while supporting a team working to tight deadlines in a performance‑driven environment. You communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of customers, from private individuals to businesses and internal departments, adapting your style to suit the audience and ensuring fair and consistent outcomes.

As a line manager, you are supportive, approachable and committed to developing others. You know how to motivate a team, set clear expectations and provide constructive coaching to help officers deliver strong results. You foster a positive working culture built on collaboration and continuous improvement.

You are confident using invoice processing and case management systems, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate data. You will be fluent in the interpretation of data and able to summarise this to a target audience as necessary. Experience using the Unit 4 system is desirable, but training will be provided for the right candidate.
